Re: Newbi with rough Chaly (cf70)
I thought about bumping the electrics to 12v, but I think I have enough of a project on my hands..

Phil I'm going to get a gel cell battery, far better than lead acid, and this guy has them for £7 inc p&p

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... ESINDXX:IT

I've had some of his cells before, no problem. I put a gell cell in a Speedfight 100, so much easier than messing with acid, etc

Paid £210.12 mate, won it with a cheeky last second 2p bid :D . I think the exhaust was made by Stevie Wonder, looking at the state of it
Thanks for the link for the Gel battery, im a long way off wanting a battery yet, as I need to buy a new "water bottle petrol tank, but ill get one at that price & store it.
6v is an experience mate, especially at night !!!.
A candle in a sock comes to mind.
ps how much did you pay for yours ?

Now have an ignition switch and Battery (Gel) on order

Phil I know you think electrics are a long way away on your rebuild, BUT the way I see it, I can take the loom off the bike, bring it indoors, lay it on the table, and start labeling and testing the loom. I can attach the battery to the loom (nice and clean gel cells), add the switch and a couple of 6v bulbs, and I can label/test each part. So I end up with a loom I know will work, and is labeled. I also ordered an indicator relay (Winker  ), and that also will be added to the loom and some 6v bulbs used to test they work ok. This is all something you can do indoors at night, or if its raining.

Eh Voila, un Frame

I searched around looking for a very large socket to fit the top nut of the forks (steering head), couldn't find one, and thoughts of having to buy one came to mind, then I tried by hand, and yep it was loose. No wonder several ball barings are missing :o . The only hard part so far was undoing the front wheel nuts, I think someone must have jumped up and down with a 6ft extension on the socket, took me ages and ages, of bashing with a lump hammer before the spanner would budge it.
Now I've just got to figure out how to get the lower legs out of the front fork assembly.

Off to Wilkos tomorrow for the biggest tin of paint stripper they have in stock,,,,

I rang ooracing today, and kept getting an answer phone telling me their hours, even though I was ringing during their working hours, perhaps they are on vacation ? but nothing is showing on their website, I've sent them an email, lets hope they reply.

Meanwhile I noticed yesterday when stripping the old gal down that the front forks are marginally BENT about 5mm from top to bottom, so I found a local guy (Stotfold Engineers) and I have left them with him, for pounds notes :P (turns out he has just rebuilt a ST50) its a small World. I've also ordered some replacement engine/frame bolts and other chrome nuts.

Brought a big tin of paint stripper, so gloves on later, and will discover what the orginal colour was ?

OK, now have the front forks/stanchions straighened (£30 notes), so one less job, also OO racing tell me they should have stock of these headland adapters soon

Meanwhile frame/front forks/rear swinging arm are all rubbed down, and ready for priming. The slop I felt in the rear swinging arm is possibly down to the wrong bolt (9.7mm not 10mm), but that can wait.
Tonight I layed the loom out on the coffee table, and labeled and tested every wire, and coloured in my wiring diagram using paintbrush (much easier to follow), and that raised a point I need an answer to;

Being a 1975 bike, I expected (my wifes was a 1977 and that was 6v), it to be 6v, but now I'm thinking NOT. The closest diagram I could find that matches mine, includes a CDI unit and AS41-CDI coil. I can find little out about the coil or Shindengen cdi unit (this was already installed in the bike as an oem part), and as the bike did not come with ANY switches or lights, and battery I'm not sure if this beast is 12volt or 6volt, the circuit diagram I have (CF70 1984), shows the battery as 12V4 (4amp), so now I need confirmation that this is indeed a 12volt version ?

Anyone ?

ps if it helps the chassis number is CF70 2014076 and the V5 confirms 1975 as first registration and confirms the chassis number as valid.

Hi
6 volt bikes were magneto not CDI so maybe someone has started to upgrade the bike to 12 volt just to wind you up

Maybe, but it looks like standard fit equipment, even matches the wiring diagram, I gather (and please correct me), there were some early 6volt cdi versions ?

Really desperate to know if this is 12volt or 6, before I try hooking it all back together ?????
