Newbi with rough Chaly (cf70)
Like one of your other posters, I've also just got a CF70 on Fleabay (must be the weather)

To cut a long story short, my wife had one of these little workhorses back in the 70's, and that bike was sold to me (by her indoors, who was then the girlfreind), I sold it to my father, he passed it to my mother, I brought it back, my father brought it back off me, and so on and so on, till he sold it to some oik who took it off road and trashed it. I've been looking for a long while to get another, and this one came up at the right price, so here we are.

I've done a few bike rebuilds in my time from mopeds to my latest XV 750 Virago (second love).

Going to pick it up Sunday, and intend to strip it down to frame level, and rebuild upwards, so anyone interested in a blow by blow photo record ?, and I'm looking for advice whilst doing this BIG time...

Currently she is black, but she will be turned (kicking and screaming) into the same colour my wifes bike was, Blue.

Looks like I'm going to need at least a speedo, housing and fron light assembly.

Hiya
Looks like a field bike to me, you have at least the bones of a good rebuild like most people you will have to search the auction sites for parts or get retro parts from the usual suspects Thailand is quite prolific.
yes a photo record would be great I'm sure James did one and thats how I found this site.

Hmm, now I have the bike I find its the Japanese version (CF70C or SE), that has a square headlight, not round. It has not healdlight, no speedo, no indiactors, been butchered to run without battery, or ignition switch (also missing), however the good points are, Engine starts and runs real sweet, no smoke, no knocking, frame looks solid, and the handle bar switches are still fitted. Torn between keeping it as a C, or getting some D,E forks off Fleabay, so I can put the round headlight (lots on fleabay), so she will be a cross between a C and a D, Thoughts ?

Hi Graham
Welcome to the forum, im a Chaly virgin too  , think it might of been my "beast" you were on about in your opening line

Looks like yours is a little more complete than mine, I will have to get new/2nd hand forks as the headlamp ears have been hacked off.
A crazy "custom exhaust" is the least of my worries & an interesting line in front wheel spacers too, all the wiring has been "carefully removed" ie chopped off, but the little bugger started 3rd prod after approx 10/12 years of silence.
Trouble is I couldn't stop the thing as it has no ignition switch, so just let it run out of juice.
Very solid frame with tatty tin wear but a very solid basis for a resto. Photies will be great as it will stop me making daft mistakes
Good luck
Phil.

Hi Phil, boy I feel your pain.

Heres a pic or two of my wiring (Once I had removed a mile of sticky tape)

I emailed a few suppliers asking for details on wiring and the original square headlight, and they keep telling me the square light didnt get fitted till 1980s, but mine is 1975 (log books dont lie).

Trying to fathom out the wiring is my first main issue...

ps where are you located?

Hi Graham
Wouldn't worry too much about the wiring as it looks quite complete, apart from the obvious missing bullet terminals, you can get these on evil bay & just crimp them on.
What you need is a good wiring diagram, im sure there is a link somewere on the forum, if you have a look on ebay at item no 220826126763 that might solve all your problems mate. ;)

Im based "oop norf" near Wigan / Warrington
Cheers
Phil.

And you think you have problems

Ouch Phil, looks like someone turned their back and someone had the bits away....

I had a last ride on mine this afternoon (the advantage of living on a farm), got about a mile from home and ran out of petrol, oh well, we live and learn.

Pushed (or should I say Scooted) home, and set about removing the wiring harness, rear wheel and swinging arm.

Talk about mis-match of bolts and screws, I don't think any of them were original parts, yet more hacking of the wires coming from the generator, but nothing that can't be sorted later.
I'm also thinking that aint the correct kick start, IS IT ?

The paint doent look bad in the pictures, but its MATT, and has been painted by hand YUKKKKKK, probably a can of wilkinsons front door paint or similar, so that will need a BIG tin of nitro-mors this weekend...
