After yesterdays great success today's isn't as good. The D.I.D. chain I bought a couple of months ago isn't long enough! :( I'm about two links too short so will have to buy a new one.

Was hoping to get the bike finished today but it's going to be another week at least now.

Glad to hear you got to the bottom of the problem Tufty!

I went to a bike shop to get a new chain today and they said they don't do chains as small as the ones for my bike

Will have to order a new one online! Haven't got anything done today, hoping for some better luck soon!

First: congrats on the spark!
Second: the head light has to be earthed as well, this is done trough the wire loom, not directly to the frame.
Easy to check in the headlight, see (meassure) if there is a connection between the wire & frame.
Third: weird story about the chain, normally they have to be shortened...

Thanks!

Oh right ok, so basically it is earthed through a wire and that's it? I have probably got it wired up wrong but I said that about the rest of the bike and it turned out that I had actually got it all correct.

The chain I bought a couple of months ago is only 86 links, I need one with 88 links so am going to purchase one today. Only got 3 jobs left to do on the bike before I can take it for an MOT:

- Fix headlight
- Oil change
- Fit new chain

Not long left to go now! Although there is always loads of little jobs left to do I am not going to be too fussy with cleaning it up because I just want to ride the damn thing now!

Update

New chain arrived and I fitted it without any problems yesterday. I think I have the headlight issue sorted but the headlight only seems to come on when you give it a few revs, is this normal? My uncle seems to think so? When you let off the revs it does stay on. Obviously it also gets brighter the harder you rev the bike. Tail-light and speedo light works fine.

Still need to get an oil change done.

Noticed a bit of steam/smoke coming from the bike earlier. I had left it on full choke for about 10 minutes, could that have been the cause? Let it cool and started it again (first kick) and just give it the minimum choke and it didn't seem to smoke/steam. Also, there was a lot of condensation in the exhaust which came out. Do you think this could have been a factor? Especially at the bend just out of the engine.

Need to fit my new numberplace as well but the bike is now insured and I only need MOT and Tax before I can take it on the road.
Give it a spin round the garden earlier, seems to ride nicely :)

Update

Today has been probably the most productive day I have ever had! Not just because of the bike (that hardly played a part) but in general!

Anyway... you probably don't want to hear my life story so I will update you on the bike! Last night was spent getting the bike ready for the MOT and then this morning my brother-in-law picked me up at 8.30am and we took the bike in the back of his car!
Dropped the bike off after having a chat with one of the mechanics who commented how rare it was etc and then returned at 3.30pm to collect it. I walked in the door and was greeted by a guy I saw earlier who told me it had passed! Woohoo! 8-)

There were no advisories but they had to do a couple of things to get it through the MOT. They fitted a rear reflector to the number plate (will get pics soon), replaced a wire in the headlight bucket because of my headlight issue and also pumped up the rear tyre a bit more. All in all it cost me about £40 - bargain!
A couple of people asked me if I wanted to sell it also!

On the way home I stopped off at the post office with my new MOT and bought my road tax for £15 :)

This evening I decided to take it out twice... covered over 20 miles in total on it. Seemed to ride ok but there are a couple of issues I need to sort.

Here are the issues:

- On one of the headlight settings the headlight flickers or doesn't work at all (I thought they had fixed that issue)!
- The rear brake lever vibrates a little and you can hear it above 30mph
- The bike when hot won't idle without giving it a few extra revs.
- Brakes are rubbish... can't remember them being this bad but need to adjust them probably. Also, have a lot of brake dust on the rear wheel now!
- Bike won't go above 35mph and takes an age to get there.
- Bike is drinking fuel!
- Needs nearly full choke to run.

Can anyone shed any light?

Also, a big thanks to everyone on this forum who has helped me along the way... I really appreciate it!

Pictures coming soon ;)

Congrats! Almost there...
- badd mass probably. Does it also flicker when your standing still?
- maybe you forgot the bolt in your frame that prvents the brake lever from going higher? This big bolt goes into your frame...
- check the oil you used. Otherwise: adjust the clutch. This is necessary every couple of 1000km.
- give them a little more time to work in themselves. If they don't get any better, check for installation mistakes. They really aren't that bad.
- probably bad ignition or carburation setup. Brakes aren't set too tight? Wheels turn freely? Engine produces awkard sounds? Clutch isn't slipping?
- She should :D Check the carb settings, see if you don't have an air leak anywhere,...
- Carb settings: 1) too few fuel 2) too many air (check thescraw on the carb + air leaks around the manifold)

Hi Waynus!

Thanks for the input!

I have done another 30 miles or so on the bike since my last message and I still have some problems although I have fixed others!

The brake issue is now solved (I think)!
The headlight still isn't perfect but on one setting my light works which is good!

Still have my performance issue (can't go above 35mph and have poor acceleration) and may have made it worse by adjusting the carb! I know the gasket for the intake on the engine is broken, could this be causing an air leak and giving me problems? If that is the case it should be an easy fix I hope?

The bike is still leaking fuel as well as I don't know how to fix that float issue!

Thanks :)
