Hi
I have an old style carburettor on my ST.It is different to other carbys in this way.It has a spring loaded claw thing on the end of the throttle cable that attaches to another small cable that comes out of the top of the carby. I have seen diagrams of this type of carby on the net somewhere, but I can't seem to find it any more. Can anyone direct me to a diagram so I can reconstruct mine? Thanks.

Is it a seperate cable for the choke perhaps?
Otherwise it's a type I've never seen...

Here is a photo(I hope) of the throttle cable connection to the top of the carby.I really don't know if its original. The top tube into the carby is not threaded and only has a small rubber cap.Ever seen anything like this??carby2.jpg

Wow... you lucky guy!
This is the ST70Z throttle cable.
This allows you to disconnect the cable when removing the front fork.
It's worth quite a few £££.

Thanks Waynus. That explains a few things.I bought a short replacement throttle cable, but it is still too long compared to the original one which is unusable now. Also I've been reading old threads and found out about "low rider " handle bars. My ST has those and they look original to me.Is that possible for my year? Are there any other variations between a ST70Z and later Type one ST's that I should know about?

Yes, that's possible about the handle bars.
Altough they can be bent manually after purchase as well.

You should have the removeable front forks, the detacheable throttle cable, extra loom plug behind the headlight, special holder on the frame (right side) for the clutch cable, mostly a manual clutch (and thus an extra lever at the left), 4 gears, different decals,...

I have the detachable front forks. The engine is a semi automatic and there is no welded attachment on the handlebars for the clutch grip on the left hand side. Was there a 3 speed auto version? and is that the special holder you were talking about?

The decals and badges are correct.
That's indeed the small bracket I was talking about.
They had a 3-speed semi as well.
The right handle bar seems to be bent, judging from the picture. Are they 100% equal?

Yes ,they are equal. It's just the angle of the photo.I must say I don't really like the look or feel of the bars this way, even if it is correct. What is the story with them?
Are the shorter st70z throttle cables available anywhere? Even with the one I've got,I'll have to grind the end a little bit to fit through the cable tensioner.

Don't know the story, they just appear on some of the bikes, even CT's.
I highly doubt if the throttles cables are still available. Maybe you could measure it up and source for o Monkey cable (Z50a) or something and adapt it a bit?
