Hi,

I have slowly been Restoring my 1976 ST70. I have picked up a complete new headlight as the old one was broken. The problem is that the new one dose not have a position light (parking light) just a main bulb for high and low beam.

Will it pass an MOT?

Has anyone else had tis problem?

Thanks
David

Hi
I'm having the same dilema now, I have my old one which is a bit pitted around the back of the light on the rim but I wanted my bike to look towards new (not concours) and I feel that the headlight is a focal point of the front of the bike so obviously a new headlight would have given it the edge!! :D The new ones that seem to be being supplied are all minus the parking light holder - even MBUK are the same. :? I think the genuine ones with the parking light holder are now discontinued by Honda - even CMSNL no longer have them. In fact I've noticed lately that a lot of parts on the CMSNL site are starting to become no longer available - I just wonder whether or not Honda is starting to phase out the items that they do not sell a lot of!! As for the MOT, that's a tricky one; you may be able to say that sidelights weren't fitted to the bike and as such you cant demonstrate them????

I know that the back (reflector) of the light is metal so you could drill it carefully to the correct size but then there's the job of attaching a holder to locate the sidelight bulb!!  How could one do that - POSSIBLY USE SOME CAREFULLY PLACED STRONG GLUE OR MAYBE SOME STRONG SILICONE SEALENT?? The only other thing is to keep searching but its gonna be difficult - for you and me both :!: :!:

Re: Position light
Are they a legal requirement? Very good point and the answer is I don't know.

Would it pass an MOT? Probably yes.
I have watched my various bikes being MOT'd over the years and I can never recall the tester checking the front parking light, they always just turn the lights on and check Hi/Low.

I have a new front light for my ST70, it is one of the Far Eastern copies without a sidelight position but is marked Stanley and fits perfectly so from the outside it is idential to the original and at less than £10 it is a bargain.
Having said that, my original glass & reflector are ok and it is just the chrome rim that is damaged so I could just swop the rim and retain the old light.

Originally, there were two different types of lo/hi on the headlights.
One with two seperate bulbsn the other with a single bulb which has to different settings.
Make sure you don't have that latest version, but fitted a single wired bulb?

Re: Position light
Certainly the one I purchased (which looking at the packaging is also the one most widely available from the Far East and also the USA) has a twin filiment bulb, the same type incidently as the later 12V Dax (but 6V in this case of course).

Hi Gents
the modern dax replicas do not have a parking light (side light) my 1974 Lady does not have indicators and as this was not a requirement at the time it is o/k also you need the correct switch which fits on the side of the headlight bowl. The other point is the front side light and rear light dont work unless the motor is running on a 6 volt m/c.

Re: Position light
Hi guys

Maybe Waynus can answer this for me. My latest restoration is a 1977 ST70 (6V) and was not fitted with indicators as standard. I have recently acquired the proper brackets that were spot welded to the forks on the European and far eastern models. I have attached these to the forks and I have also purchased the switchgear, (horn & indicator together in one unit) the flasher relay and mounting bracket fitted to the European models as I want to fit indicators to the bike. I notice the battery holder has the mounting slot for the relay holder. Am I likely to have any problems in doing this; is some of the wiring already in the loom but not in use as standard etc? IMG_9179 Small.jpg NOTE THE USE OF GEN HONDA WINKERS - NONE OF THIS POOR QUALITY CHINKY JUNK!!

Re: Position light
Thanks all, I think I will go with the no park light option. My Hornet 600 2007 had no park light either.
As I have given up on getting the proper light switch (left side of headlight shell) I have decided to make my own. It's cost all of £2.00 so far and I have got working lights. I just need to work out what the generator does, it seems to add more power depending on the load required from the lights.

Cheers all

The wire loom is exactly the same as the European and Japanese versions, so the wiring is already in place.
You can see two wires going nowhere, under your rear light bracket. The grounding has to be made coming from the indicators themselves.
Fit everything in the right place (the wiring diagrams on this forum should help you out) and it should work.
You'll need a good working battery.

HI, I have a 1973 kawasaki Z1 with no parking light but it does have a position on the light switch for parking light. The bike is a US spec bike that never had a parking light fitted and I have never had any problem when it came to be MOT'd.
