Looks good Rob!

Similar to mine although I used 2 of the biggest G-clamps on earth (borrowed from a friend) instead of the threaded rod. It might be a hassle to build a tool for this job but trying to do it without is frustrating and extremely dangerous!

Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures/guide.

Lou Snutts wrote:Hi Blue, I've recently aquired a 'red' un - and stripped it to the same degree as yours - I'm arguing with myself about spraying it or leaving it (the paint is a little better than yours close up, but not much). I'd be interestd to know what you're quoted to do the job (if you don't mind), and if you can recommend anyone in particular. Off to make a shock splitting jig now!
Cheers.
Lou.
Hey Lou,
I have only checked with 1 firm so far, to Blast, prepare and paint (paint exclusive!)
This is using the 2 Pack paint not powerder coat.
Frame £150
Swing Arm £25
Forks £25
Muguards £25 each

These are rough prices and they want to get it all broken down and take to stuff to them so they can look and give me a full quote for all the bits.

I plan on doing the wheels, and all the black stuff at the same time.

Im hoping to knock them down with cash :)

Not sure if thats exspenive but I have seen there work and its good.
As soon as I have the shocks apart and a day off work, Im going to head over there and get a proper quote.

Thanks to you all for the Shock advise, I'm off to homebase for some wood and threaded rod :)

Thanks for the info' Blue. I'll get a quote from a guy here in Liverpool, he only does powder coating tho' and I'm not sure if stove enamelling would be better. Good luck splitting those shocks.

Powdercoating scares me as it is hard to remove and difficult to touch up if you scratch it.
Just made my shock splitter, cost me 2.49 :) hopefully it will do the job so I can get her painted.

How did you get on with your Jig Lou?

Cheers,

Thought I would bring this thread to the top again as I have just stripped down my rear shocks (upper cases to be painted, lower cases to be re-chromed) and also found it easy enough to do by hand. I'm the first to admit that if you were ignorant of the dangers and just launched into it there is every chance that you could end up with a top-mount through the face but if you are aware of what could happen and work acordingly then it is a simple and quick operation. A third hand would have been conveniant when pulling down on the top-cover whilst also holding the spanner whilst turning the top mount but it all went ok.
The only downside is that one of the plastic guides is shot to pieces and they are no-longer available new so I will proabably try to search out a secondhand one (don't really want tot have to buy somebodys old shocks just for that one piece though) but on the upside there is still some (well ok, a bit) dampening action so they are still quite usable and with some new rubber bushes will go on for years yet.

My plastic guides are shot too, I also can't get the chrome bit over the end of the shock, maybe I'm missing something?
I have an idea how to make new guides, will let you know once I have tested my theory.
Hopefully will be another cheap fix. ;)
