Hello everyone, i am a noob

After just coming back from asia and riding bikes all the time, I realised I needed a bike in the UK.
When I was a kid my uncle gave me a chaly cf70 that i got running and used to ride around fields etc..
It still runs now, my cousin is restoring it.
Anyway to cut to the chase I just bought another Chaly from EBay last week and found this forum so decided to join, as Dax and Chalys do have a lot in common.

Here she is:

Since the picture was taken i have put a new seat cover on and some mirrors.
I have not taken the bike out on the road yet as i need to do a cbt and get it taxed.

I have a couple of problems, any advice would be much appreciated.

1. sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesnt. yesterday it started first kick and i rode it around in the garden for a bit. Went to start it again 1/2 hour later and it wouldnt start at all. Petrol tap is on. Same again today.

2. Indicators have just stopped working. No lights come on at all. It had a new repeater unit put in for the MOT by the seller 2 weeks ago. I dont think its the switch on the handlebars because when you switch it the neutral light dims a little which must mean its doing something? All bulbs are fine and i have checked most connections. Could it be an earthing problem? How are the indicators earthed? What else could it be?

Cheers.

Hi and welcome to the group.

Is that the bike that was in Stratford Road Motorcycles in Wolverton, Milton Keynes?
I looked at it the other week when I went in to buy some oil for the ST70 and thought it looked ok.
From what I gather it went for less on Ebay than they were asking for it when it was in the shop.

The running problem could just be old fuel or muck in the tank or carb, worth giving it a thorough clean through & service before you start looking for problems.

The battery could be flat/dead as it needs a decent run to charge it properly. You need to take it off and charge it properly with a 6V battery charger, while you are doing this check all connections and if this fails to make it work then you need to check the output of the generator. The old 6V system does not like supporting indicators unless the generator is chucking out some decent charge, do the indicators and/or neutral light get any brighter when the engine is running?

Hi,

Yep thats the same bike, i paid £389 for it on ebay, don't really know if it was a deal or not, but I am happy with it.

Thanks for the advice, i'll get the battery charged up at the weekend and see if that makes much difference. The horn is very quiet and reduces to just a click quite quickly. I would have thought the indicators still may work dimly though if the charge is low.

I'll give the carb and tank a clean and put some fresh fuel in see if that help things also, the spark seems juicy enough so fuel starvation could very likely be the problem.

Cheers

That's a steal!
The bike would be worth 1000 - 1500€ here if all papers are present.
You can make something wonderfull out of a chaly.

Battery is needed for the indicators to work.
Like litch said, give the carb and tank a good clean, make sure the tank stop isn't preventing from air getting in.
That would explain a short run and problems afterwards...

Got the engine running properly now, took the tank off and cleaned out all the crap in the filter and the little reservoir at the bottom, flushed it through a few times and now it works fine.
Havent sorted theindicators yet, Battery is on charge now so i'll try it later.
Just waiting for the V5 to come through now, then i can get on the road : :P

Battery charged and indicators working, thanks so much for your advice guys!!

I'll post some new pics soon and then i'll be asking about tuning and new parts...

Litch and James, you seem to live fairly close to me, maybe a summer evening meet/ride could be arranged when im on the road, if we can find a place inbetween where we all live that doesnt involve big roads.

Let me know what you think....

Bike is looking great Joe!

Glad you got the things sorted on it.

Yeah I would be up for a meet this summer but obviously need to fix my bike first as it has MAJOR running problems :( lol

Very very nice.
I'm throw in some cool CF70 pictures at the bottom of this post, so you get the idea how much you'll end up spending.

Ow, and James: why don't you offer me and the misses a nice vacation in your oh-so sunny country? (not...)
I won't leave before I fixed your bike. (maybe this parts scares you off  )

I would invite you but somehow I don't think you would ever leave because of the problems it has

Joe, I was looking on a map and you are quite a distance from me (certainly not close enough for me to ride to or even meet half way). I am South of the county and live near a town called Wallingford.

Definitely up for a meeting of some sort (if I can get my bike running properly lol).
