What is and What Should Never be
I've ton a ton of research since getting my ST70 (a970) 3 speed auto. I have read many websites and looked at a ton of different models. There are however a few things I can't understand yet (well probably more than a few things)....

1) My bike came with this crank type of thing on the triple tree where the nut usually is. Why does mine have it and I dont see it anywhere else? What is it for?
2) Mine came with bars that extend from the front frame down to protect the engine (I suppose). Is this stock?
3) I hear a lot about KO-K1_etc, etc.... I am assuming mine is a KO model because of three speed/auto 1970 mfg.?
* I have a manual on order.
** I bought my ST70 used from the original owner just a month or so ago.
*** I am trying to learn about these wonderful little machines so I can appreciate them even more.

You don't have an ST70! You have a CT70 ( very rare in UK, was American version of Dax, ST70). Google CT70 for images, Wikipedia for info. Vmax

PS- As there are some CT90s, and your"st70" does 50MPH, are you sure it isn't a 90  VMax

I do have an ST70, it says so right on the bike as follows:
Serial Number: ST70-507862
Model: ST70
General Export Type ll

And I have a picture of it on here also. Anyway, hey, I thought you were the expert? :-) Just kidding. And today I got her up to 53 on my level street. Just runs good I suppose. :P

The quastions still stand if there are any more takers, and one more. My bike just has the center stand, no side stand. I ordered a complete new one for it though.

Yes, you have a ST70, export type.
The handle is to dismount very quick and easy the complete front end for transportation.
You'll notice an extra connector block behind the headlight, and also your throttle cable can be disconnected.
(but when I look at the picture, it doen't seems to be there anymore)
Very rare, sought after and expensive bikes.
The crash bar is most likely stock.

Thats great news, thanks! The throttle quick disconnect was there. The throttle cable was very torn up so I bought a standard one and replaced it. Now that I know what I know about it I will buy the parts to make it original again. Being able to disconnect the front end is a great benefit as I have a trailer to camp with and will be taking her with me.

I do have the disconnect behind the headlight, your right, I wondered what that was.

My manual for the C70 came and I was dissapointed that it really does not cover too much about my ST70. Just some basic things. Mostly is for other bikes.

So you think I got a good deal at $1100.00 US for her? I have spent a few hundred already on replacement parts. What do you think she is worth as she sits now? Not that I will sell her. She's a keeper and a great runner.

Re: What is and What Should Never be
I bought a couple of these front ends before in the US.
Even with shipment and taxes it was well worth it.
They sell at a whopping $600 here, just the forks.
Here, $1100 would be a cracking deal. In the US, I've seen more bikes going for just under or quite a lot above that.
It's well worth keeping her stock, as more and more people will hear about this great ST70Z version.
This kind of front fork also came on the mini trails, z50z.
The disconnectable throttle cable and the other small parts are very rare and can't be bought new.

I have an 1969 st70 that has the "crank" to remove the front fork and handle bars as well.
