Blue,

I know now why you are a 'moderator' you have all the answers!!

Thanks very much for that. I can now test to see if I actually have three gears !!!

Cheers

My Chaly is 3 down, just make sure you are all the way to the top, you can neutralize between each gear so you maybe in neutral between say 1st & 2nd.

Hi Qualey,

Thanks for the reply - 3 down !

If it's not a silly question, is there any way the gears could be mixed up, ie 1 down (2nd), 2 down (1st), 3 down (3rd)

I have only ridden the bike a short distance on my drive. I click 1 down and set off, if I then click down again, it feels though the bike has gone into a lower gear - ie changed from 2nd to 1st !!

A mystery that is not easy to check with only a short runway!

Cheers

I'm happy to provide even more confusion :D

Lot's of chaly's were fitted with a 2-speed gear box.
Some of them have a 3-speed step-trough gear box (1-n-2-3-1-n-...)
Different types of gear patterns where used for the 3-speeds (n-1-2-3 for example)

I guess that's why there is or was a sticker on the frame showing the gear pattern.

Hi Blackie,

Thanks for that. I seem to have it sorted now - N, 1, 2, 3.

Just need to sort out the earthing problem on the indicators, then I can book the MOT and hopefully get into 3rd gear for the first time.

Thanks to all on the forum that have read and responded to my queries.

Cheers

Hi Chuffy

Light switch on my Chaly is on the opposite side of the ignition switch, on the top fork bracket. dependant on the type of ignition switch you have fitted, the lights may be controlled off a 3 position ign switch. Check how many wires come out of the back of the switch.
Hope this helps.
