Chaly - new member, first post
Hi all,

As a new member having recently acquired a CF70 Chaly 1975, I'm sure this will be the first of many q's and queries as I try to bring the Chaly back to life! Your help would be most appreciated.

Firstly, officialdom! What is the format of the frame no.? I can only read some of it as it has been sprayed over and then rubbed down to reveal the stamping. I have CF70 then 6 digits that are legible. This maybe the full number, but I have a feeling there is a 7th digit I cannot read!! If this is the case, is it possible to find the frame number from the reg?

As you may have guessed, I do not have the V5 and need the frame number to apply for a replacement.

Secondly, whilst I'm logged on, are the lights meant to be on all the time the engine is running? There is a H/L switch on the left bar, but no actual off/on switch.

Many thanks, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Chuffy,

Welcome, pretty certain the should be 7 digits, after the cf70- bit.
If you have the reg number just apply for the v5.
If you don't know the vin number your going to need to reveal that missing digit!
There are ways to do this, but no guarantees it will work.
Google raising vin numbers.

Not sure about the lights on a Chaly, someone else should be able to answer that one, but I would have thought there would be an off switch.

Cheers,

Blue

Thanks Blue, I will try your suggestion for revealing the VIN no.

As for applying for a V5, the form says the frame number must be supplied otherwise the form will be returned, hence my dilemna.

I'll keep trying ....

Do you know what the registration number is?
If you do you don't need to know the VIN!

Yes, I do know the reg number. However, on the V62 application form for a new V5, it says you must state the frame number! Hence my problem.

If you know someone in the trade, get them to do a HPI check on the registration, they can get the vin from that.
I'm not sure if public HPI checks will tell you this.

Dvla won't tell you the vin so your screwed unless you can raise the vin, acid solution works.

The headlight switch is on the ignition, there are two on positions, the first is for daytime riding on the second position will activate the head and taillights.

Hi Qualey,

Thanks for that, I've learnt something else new!

Whilst I'm on, what is the gear configuration, I seem to be having trouble getting 3 gears !!. Is it 1 up, 2 down, OR possibly 3 down, don't know ??

Many thanks

This is how it works on an ST70, I'm assuming its the same on the Chaly?

1st gear is UP from neutral
2nd gear is double DOWN (change has to be knocked twice from 1st)
3rd gear is DOWN again

Hope this helps, someone correct me if I'm wrong so I know for future info.

:D
