My ST70

Hi, I'm a newby here. Nice to join you. I have had a ST70 since i bought it from an F1 guy in the 70's for £50. He used to use it to get around the circuits such as brand hatch he told me. I used it then and it was last taxed in 1990 (the tax disc is still on it). It's registration ends in M which makes it a 72/3 model I believe. What is the difference between a Dax and a ST70 (not Dax?)? Is mine a Dax? Sadly I have lost the registration documents but understand i can get new ones. What exactly do I need? And if i do reregister it, will it retain the same number plate, and will i have to pay a SORN each year if I don't use it on the road? I took this out of my shed and it started second go after I remembered to switch the ignition on. The battery is dry and has probably had it. It has 8500 miles on the clock. Any comments from you guys would be appreciated. ST70.jpg

Hi Jules,

Welcome, nice little bike you got there :D
£50 a great purchase, even back then.
You can get the registration from the dvla by completing a v62 document and paying £25 I think.
But, if the bike is registered in your name there's a number on the form you can call and get it for free :D
It will keep the same plate, as for SORN it's free it's a declaration that's it's off road.
You might have to be careful as they may try to hit you for SORN fines as you've not declared it off road.

Your bike is a 6v ST70, get it on the road again :D

All ST's are known as Dax, so is yours.
It's a nice bike indeed, and yes they were often used as paddock / camper bikes because of the foldable handle bars (and even removable forks on some models) and small size.
You can get a 6v gel battery nowadays. Just make sure the regulator is in good working condition or replace it with a new style one.
Welcome!

Nice bike.

Nice to see another one rear its head, after being locked away for so many years :( "Nobody puts baby in the corner" :D :D

Hi and thanks for your reply Blue.
I am a little worried about re registering my bike and ending up with a big bill for previously not registering my bike as SORN. I have been doing a bit of Googling about the situation. One thing I found was this .."Vehicles manufactured or registered before 1 January 1973 are classed as historic vehicles and attract a nil rate of duty. However, to ensure that the vehicles are roadworthy and documentation such as MoT and insurance are current, a nil rate tax disc must be displayed in the vehicle. If the vehicle is kept off-road and has not had a licence since 31 January 1998, there is no requirement to declare SORN. However, if the vehicle has held a licence since this date, it is essential that an annual SORN declaration be made. "
from this page http://www.ukmotorists.com/sorn%20traps.asp
Which implies i do/did not have to register SORN.
On the V890 Form
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... 3/V890.pdf
it states at the bottom...... "You need to make a SORN for vehicles that have been taxed or had a SORN in
force since 31 January 1998."
Well mine does not fall into that category does it.
Cofused...Jules :D

Thanks Waynus. I know it's a long shot, but I have put same distilled water in the battery and am giving it a charge. Where is the regulator? :P

The Selenium Rectifier is a small orange plate with a short wire.
Should be very close to the battery.
