Re: gear change question for st70
Waynus,
I tried your suggestion with limited success. I was able to get it into neutral and I believe 1st gear by pulling up on it twice, however I had to do it by hand and it didn't always go into 1st or neutral when I tried. 1st gear also rev'd higher than what I thought the power should be (of course I weigh a lot more than I did when I was 14.) But it felt a little like the gear wasn't fully engaged. I tried tweaking the screw in smaller incriments than you described with the same results. I think I'm going to have to take it into a mechanic to trouble shoot it. There was also some leakage from the bolt of oil, but that could have been because I didn't tighten the bolt more than hand tight while I was moving the screw around.

Your comments have helped me understand what I needed to do, it just doesn't seem to want to cooperate fully. Thank you for your help.

Guess your clutch plates need to be replaced.
It's also possible they stick together, they should loosen up after some riding or inspection.

Same with mine, because that is the design! Find a copy of the owners manual on line which will explain this to you and should put you at ease. Try the Kawasaki H1,every Japanese bike at the time was one down then up (as now) the Kwaka all up. You just have to get used to it.
