any tools needed for setting points?
hi there. i am going to get started on this bike. do i need a flywheel extractor for setting the points? can anyone link me to one on ebay? also, are there any other tools needed to generally set up the bike to run well?

does the bike create its own spark with the magneto and kick starter, ie is the 6/12v battery only used for the lights before kick starting the bike and at traffic lights? thanks.

i can check the spark by taking the plug out and kick starting with the ignition on, right?

secondly, the spark should occur before top dead centre, is there a soft wood coffee stirrer I can put down the plug hole, if I make a mark on the coffee stirrer, how many mm/cm should the coffee stirrer be submerged into the plug hole to measure the piston near top dead centre when the spark occurs?

Points can only be set with flywheel fitted as opening cam is flywheel centre.
No battery needed for spark,if you want to check spark, remove cap from HT lead and hold 6/10mm from cylinder whilst operating k/start,distance spark will jump is indicative of strength of spark.
Ignition timing has very little scope for adjustment if assembled correctly,so you should'nt need to start inserting implements down plug hole really if your just checking spark

Chief is correct.
The proposed measurements taken from the plug hole will never be accurate enough to set the timing right.
This can be done be looking at th 'F' mark.
You'll only need a screwdriver. (feeler plates and a stroboscope are recommended)
make sure you don't completely dismount the little screw holding the points, or you'll have to dissamble the flywheel. (Which requires a flywheel puller)
