Transmission question

I have just swapped my engine over so I can work on the one that was on the bike. The one I have put on is a 1974 6v Honda engine and has a 1 up 2 down transmission. My issue is that when selecting second gear I have to press the lever down twice, once into neutral an then down again to get second. Is this normal? Should it not just go through neutral with one shift?

Spot on!! it takes some getting use too i start off in second other wise i get lost with the gears lee
