ST70 Choke

Hi world of ST70
I have an ST70 - without any docs - in Gran Canaria where there are thousands of ST70´s. Look on segundamano.es for the selling prices!

Number stamped on the ENGINE on my bike is ST70E-6304838 6volt - there may be a VIN on the chassis in the usual place but i won´t get to that till a lot of paint comes off - though i think there may not be one there at all.

So i don´t know what year it was, nor what market it was produced for - Spain i would guess...????

Question: The carburettor has the choke cable arrangements but the bike has no choke control and no place where there may have been one. Where did the choke control officially mount?

Also, the frame has mounting point for all its indicators, and the handlebar control for them... but the lights are not fitted. Commments please - i want to end up with a "true to original" bike (original original is ideal and perfection reality is less than that). But i would like to add indicators even if tehy weren´t original - if that´s not a complete contraditction and heressy!

- i will have to sell the bike after its all good for economical reasons, but i also have a Zoomer and the two are family aren't they!!! :-((

Welcome to this forum!
There's always a (factory stapend) chassis number.
Check the left frame side, just above engine sprocket and/or the front of the frame under the front fork (under H-piece) at either side.
You'll need the number to date the frame as the engine number is far less reliable.

Is it an original carb?
Chocke control is on the left side, either hand or cable controlled.

Quite a lot of different indicators and indicator locations have been used trough the years.
Some are still available, for many others remakes can be found.

Hey presto : ST70 6038979 :-)
Is there a Big Honda Book which says when and where and father´s occupation and mother´s maiden name??

That is stamped with its cross square characters start and end on the right side of the headstock. There are sheared rivetson the other side - i think someone may have tried a distract official looking VIN plate. but the plate is long gone, and now the original revealed again!!

Carb is a Sheng Wey 16100-110GY-3 (printed on the float bowl) - it has a pod air filter on it and the fuel supply pipe goes round to the wrong (rider´s right hand) side to get to the petcock. The second of main and reserve fuel feeds is blocked off (with a screw :-( ) as the petcock has no reserve position.

- so air filter parts are not original. I like the original coke can air filter.. that's going back on!!
- so carb is not original ? But choke on the carb is sprung return (and has the cable termination fittings) and so must have the cable (i could resolve it without the cable but i want to respect how it now and how it got to be here . . . thought perhaps needs must and original carb type may be the way ahead.

Where would the choke control have been mounted - i see the choke cable is a Honda Part, so was the Sheng Wey carb a factory part on some models complete with "remote" / cable choke (may or may not be on mine)?

Sheng wey is indeed a remake of the original Honda carb.
Not too bad quality, as long as you like getting your hands burn when setting the carb to reserve...
Most of them don't have the remote control, but some do indeed.
Or the carb has been messed with (choke system from the original Keihin on the Sheng way?)

I'd suggest to buy a good, used part. Preferably a complete set with intake and air filter.
(The original air filter box is still the best and -in my opinion- the nicest looking)

Your baby should been born around 1079-1981.
I'm not 100% sure of the date, because the 630xxxx numbers were reserverd for the ST50 K4. Oh well, Honda has never been good with logical numbering.
Unsure of the mother, I bet she was a CF70  , but the father is Soichiro Honda.

That's all for now, I'm taking a trip to Barcelona, I'll see you guys again next Monday.

Gracias Waynus y buenas viajes.

... ST50 VIN... likely someone put the 72cc engine in it rather than Honda used the ST50 number for a ST70 bike...

Un saludo.

Ola amigos!
Honda did sometimes use ST50 engines for their ST70 bikes. (With a bigger cylinder fitted of course)
So maybe they did the other way around as well? Don't know.

The chassis lists aren't 100% complete, so maybe I'm wrong about the ST50, maybe I'm right...
