Hi All-- picked up an ST70
Picked this wreck up for a charity run next year :-
http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver ... 294329.jpg

It's in a hell of a state -Yamaha seat bodged on- Exhaust looks like one a mate had on a mini 15 years ago, Seized engine and what looks like hammerite paint.

It's old -early 70's I think( frame number ST70-1158xx) and genuine parts are going to be almost non-existent here in NZ, and freight on some of the bigger components (seat) is going to be pricey, so what I'm hoping is that there's common parts with other honda's that I may be able to scrounge up- could any one point me in the right direction,

I'm not looking to restore but to get her running and usable for the time being

WoW!!!! :o
It is indeed the earliest ST70 type.
Low exhaust (still available new), emblems on the frame, removable front fork (worth a lot!)...

I guess the best thing you could do -since parts aren't available locally- is to buy a complete ST from Ebay, and get the parts you need ship to your door. (You don't need the heavy frame, wheels,...)

Good luck!

Cheers - hadn't realised it was anything special.
I'll post some photo's some time this week -I'm having a hell of a time trying to get the piston out of the cylinder , think I may have to split the engine and have it pressed out.
I also need to remove some bracket's that were welded on for the seat-I'll do that at work after bead blasting the frame.

The whole Idea of this project was/is to do it on the cheap, since it's an early one it almost seems a shame to carry on with my plans- on the other hand it's already been pretty messed up and I won't be cutting the frame or doing anything that cant be reversed

If you fix the crank with anything like a wooden block or so,
you should be able to get the piston off, by using a screwdiver + hammer (Richard Hammond style 8-) ) to get the tube out.
Of course, do not forget to dismount at least one of the 2 circlipses that hold the tube in place.

Well got the piston out and the Cylinder off.......
...had to use a Bearing puller to do it though.
Bloody piston's seized on the pin/conrod , got a bag tie-wrapped on an have sprayed with penetrating lube, I'll give it a couple of days and see if it frees up any.
Bore on the cylinders better than I expected - some corrosion where the piston stopped - may be able to get away with a hone rather than a rebore .
Looking in to the bottom of the motor, there's rust on the crankshaft, as best I can tell(at the moment) the Bearings feel ok-Got a feeling I'm going to have to do a complete strip down after all.
For the time being I'm looking for cheap parts on e-bay and Trade me , I'll do some more hammering and swearing at the weekend :D

The pistons not interested in moving at all, so I'm going to have to drop the motor and split the cases I'll the take the con rod and piston to work and see if I can do anything there- I'm thinking I may have to cut the piston off - just hope I can save the con rod

Nice pictures!
It's really odd that the piston is that hard to remove...
I'm afraid the crank will be damaged by the efforts. Make sure you take it's tolerance measurements.
I'm pretty sure the front plate isn't original ;)

It's turning in to a bitch -although it looked clean enough when I opened up the crank case the screws on the clutch cover are seized, and I cant find my impact driver! ah well all fun
