Cam Chain

Ok I have now got my rebuilt head on (yipee) but can not seem to work out how to get the cam chain back on. There is not enough room to feed it round the top sprocket, the workshop manual suggests feeding it back on from the crank end but how on earth do you remove the stator plate to do this.

Any advice would be welcome......

Hi,
first thing you'd should check is:
do you have a manual or automatic tension spanner for the chain?
The manual version has a bolt with nut under the stator plate.
If you loosen this, there's more space for the chain.

Automatic: loosen the bolt on the bottom of the engine, the second biggest screw (next to the oil drain plug)
Some small parts will fall out. No worries, just remember to put back everything.

It's easier if you get the chain around the sprocket before mounting the sprocket back on the cam.
Then, set the cam timing right before moving the sprocket forward and tighten it with the srews.

If you really have to remove the stator plate (which shouldn't be necessary).
Remove the big nut of the flycheel.
Use a flywheel puller (!!!) to get the flywheel of the crank.
Loosen the 2 screws on the stator plate. And pull the plate off the crank.
Re-set ignition timing.
That's all folks!

It's really just a matter of experience and owning/using the correct tools.

If you could work on your bike a whole day, accompanied by an experienced technician,
you'd be suprised how much you learned in such a short time!

True! Unfortunately everything I know I have had to learn myself. However, you will be pleased to know that I am going to get my bike sorted as I fancy riding it to work - I will create a new thread about it!

Hi, If you drop me an email I will give you my phone number and I will talk you through it or you can bring the bike round to me and I will help you with it.

All sorted now, thanks all. I did sort of work out that that would be the best way to do it. That is how I got it off in the first place. It just seemed difficult to get back on but when I got round to it all went back easy.
Roll on the start up!
