Help

I have just replaced the stator plate and points and condesor, the only stator plate I could get was a c70 type looks all the same apart from the wire terminations.

on the st70 there are 5 wires from the block plug 4 wires are white and one is colour coded I think this is the earth.I have cut and made new terminations-they seam fine.also I have reconnected the neutral switch.

The white wires could I have these the wrong way round?,I have a great spark at the points.

I am at my end and dont know the answer ,help would be great news

Well done, nice to read.

When you see sparks between the point, the condensor is worn...
So strange to read that you just placed a new one?!

Thanks for that info I will take a look at the condensor.
the bike is hard to start anyway maybe the points are not set correct?

Dre you still getting the sparks between the points?
If so, don't look any further, but sort out this problem first.
After that, re-set the timing (sparks and camchain) and check every electric related device (spark plug + setting + it's wire, coil,...)

If the electrics are perfect, check your carb settings and clean if necessary.

ok thanks for this,I dont think its the carb ,cleaned with a toothbrush and blowen the jets with airline.took out the tank and cleaned.
when I replaced the stator plate the wiring terminations were diffrent I thought at first the wires were all white but after cleaning I saw the sleaves were colour coded apart from 2,with I changed around until I had a spark at the plug.

The timing is set the best I can get it IE-9 oclock and 12 oclock but to me it still looks 1 0r 2 ml out with cam sprocket mark on the head, but I did notice a little wear on the cam shaft recess for the woodraft key.

I have also reseated the values - new plug- cut back the ht lead for better conection - new battery.

I will take a fresh look at the spark in the points when I put the bike back together next week.

I must admit this bike is costing far to much to fix up the front fork rebuild was £200 rear shocks £52 and loads of other stuff from ebay was £80 .When the wheels and mudgards come back from the paint shop I will get back to the engine, the crankcases are at the sanblasters as well as more bits,I still need a new ex-pipe and fitting kit and more new bolts and screws ect and I may treat the bike to a new seat.

Lucky I only paid £450 for the bike and semi restored it should lay in around £1100 with a mot and tax but it will be nice,I am not re-painting the frame and swinger ,to me this just loses the bikes 33 year old charm.

thanks for your tips its a great help

Hi Kirk,

Glad to see you are getting the problems sorted :)

These little bikes seem to eat money, mine forever needed money spending on it and still does! I used to total up how much I had spent but then decided to stop because it was getting depressing! I think eventually you can get to a stage where it just requires general maintenance but for me that is a long way ahead as I just want everything to be near perfect!

Keep up the good work!
