Rectifier

Hi all. Just thought I would have another go at getting it going, I set the points gap then got a light bulb hooked up to check the timing I connect an earth to the bulb and when I touched it to the frame there were sparks flying, is this normal, when you switch the bike off does it short out to stop it, thank you

If you connect a lead from the output of the ignition coil to a lamp and the other side of the lamp to earth and kick the bike over the lamp should flash slightly,make sure the key is switched on as the ht coil is earthed in the off position.
You can check the ht coil by putting a 6v battery straight across the coil and just flashing the battery lead on the primary side of the coil ,making sure you’ve got a negative on the frame of the coil and the side of the plug .
