headstock bearings.

Hi,
is it worthwhile changing to taper roller bearings in the headstock?. are the old cups easy to remove?
and are the new style bearings easy to fit. how do you know how far to insert new bearings.
the frame has been stripped so now is the time to decide.loads of questions
