High or low exhaust?

My 1971 ST50 came with no exhaust, I have seen pictures of early bikes with low exhausts, was there a cut off point where the low exhaust was discontinued?
I can't make up my mind which looks best or whether to go with what it would have been in 1971, if I knew what that was.
Any advice appreciated, thanks.
