After a ST70

Hi there,

I'm new to the website and I'm looking for a ST70, I owned one back in 1975. I've got an old Jap classic at the moment, a Kawasaki H2.
I'd really appreciate some buying advice. For instance is it preferable for the engine and frame numbers to match or be within a certain range?
Is there any way of confirming the year of manufacture via these numbers. Or is it not quite as 'fussy' as other classic vehicles.
Anyway I'm looking for a runner to restore or something restored, but not a total basket case.
Any help or pointers gratefully received.

Hi Paul, good luck with the search for your running restoration project, I too prefer a running bike to restore, I would say that this site is more or less for all types of ST,s with there different modes and uprated brakes and suspension and engines or completely standard, we seem to get lots of different variations and lots of the parts are quite readily available :D

Hi Paul,

Engine and frame numbers very rarely match, in fact the only one I've seen that had match numbers to me look dodgy, as in it looked like the numbers had been freshly stamped on the engine case.

You can find out the year of manufacture from Honda UK, if you ask they can normally verify the engine number is correct.
This is not a free service, they will change you. http://www.honda.co.uk/motorcycles/my-b ... cture.html
Alternatively this can be done from a Honda owners club, personally I prefer to do ti from Honda.

Ebay is a good place to look for a bike, all I can say is make sure you buy one with a V5 if possible ideally complete as some of the little parts are getting harder to find and can cost.

Make sure the VIN numbers are visible and not been messed about with, you would be surprised how many dodgy bikes are out there.
Check to see if there is any signs of stress or cracks around the engine mounts, if its been repainted in that area take a good look.

There are lots of differences in the bikes as many have been modified over the years, so just look around and see what one you prefer.
Personally I like the look of the 6v models purely for the helmet mudguards.

Google the bike and look at images this should give you a good idea.

best of luck.
