Chaly - something blown !!
Hi guys,

Help please for a Chaly novice!

Picture the scene. Bike ticking over nicely whilst I am trying to get the indicators working. 6v system needs the engine running. After getting bored checking for bad earth problems, I thought, oh, I'll just check how tight the crankcase bolts are as I have a small oil leak.

Screwdriver in bottom screw and I touched the exhaust with it. The engine cut out immediately, something obviously shorted. Now I have no spark at the plug. What is likely to have gone? Condensor, rectifier, I haven't a clue, any help greatly appreciated.

The battery fuse is okay, neutral light, horn etc all work, so it must be something on the ignition circuit.

If only I was more knowledgeable, this is my first project, so I guess, it's a big learning curve.

Thanks Chuffy

I guess only the electrics running directly from the battery are working now.
That is, untill you drained the battery.
Check if the ignition and light coils are still providing current.
If so, my guess would be a bad earthing of the high tension coil.
Probably your rectifier is now broken as well.
Did you recently painted the frame?

I'm afraid you'll need to check each part of the wire loom for bad connections and earthing.

Thanks to Blue and Waynus for your quick replies.

Electrics are not my strong point, but Ill just have to be patient and work through it. The coil, if I've identified it correctly, fits inside the down tube of the frame, not easy to get at! Not found the rectifier yet but I'm sure I will.

The frame has been painted (badly) at some point, so I think earthing is the big issue.

Oh for an expert locally to lend me a hand in exchange for some beer vouchers!!! I'm sure a lot of what is needed is easy to those that know what they are doing.

All running again now, thankfully. All I did in the end was remove the coil, wire brush the fixing points and replaced it. Hey presto I had a spark.

Just the annoying earth fault / voltage drop on the indicators to sort out now.

Thanks everyone.

Chuffy
