What is that?

Hi everybody, I just got home and was looking over a frame and forks (actually a full kit ST70) and noticed an apendidge on the right side below the foot break lever mount. Does anyone know what or why it is there? Is it for the "down" type exhaust pipe?

Spot on!
Your frame is probably dated somewhere between '68 - '71.

Thanks Waynus, This is the first one I have seen with-out its muffler. Your right, it is an early one the frame number is only:127097. I actually bought it because it has the Belgium mud guards. Any other differences you think I should know about ? It looks like it wont be in the way so I doubt I will cut it off, may want to try a down pipe sometime. . . Thanks again

Well, it shouldn't be a problem to mount a down pipe.
The only thing I can think of is with an exhaust such a the Over Alu Racing Down Round - Old type (as seen on my EX brown dax) because this has a bent under the engine.

If your bike came originally with the Belgian fenders, it is probably a Jap import bike.
If you have the original fork, this should be the detachable version (with the handle on top -> rare and expensive!) and without mountings for German mudguards on the legs.
Also, the seat is different (somewhat like the CT) and the headlight is smaller. (Like the UK versions)

Based on your frame number, it could either be a ST50z or ST70z, indeed built in 1969 (first version, woohoo!!!)
model frame number range built date
ST50Z ST50-100001 - 145513 '69
ST70Z ST70-100001 - 137313 '69

ST50Z / ST70Z, chaly exhaust, german fenders, HONDA letters on frame

You pretty much got it right. I only buy the removable front bikes for myself. Got standard CTs for friends and family. Heres a couple more shots of her. . . .

I have one other complete Dax Export sitting in Virginia storage. . . . lonely

Ow my... how much I'd like to have a Jap Detacheable front fork on my bike...
Anyways, they look al good thos bikes of yours.
Seems like they are realistic projects, with a good cleaning and lots of care the will ride like new.
What do you plan with these?
Complete overhauling? Or just the mechanics and ride them like they are meant to be?

I guess you fancy blue 8-)

Hmmm, I thought the removeable front was common in euro models too, guess not? Well, that is the only models I am interested in.

The first plan was to have a pair so my sweetheart and I could go puttin about together. My current interest has a son so 3 may be nessessary. Right now I am getting ready to strip down my original and send the bits out for chrome and powder coating. I like how James turned out. I figure 1 blue, 1 red, and then the grey goat (as I call it). The Belgian fendered will be my "hotrod", but not sure how just yet. . . .

Hotrod style?
Then the German fenders would probably suit the concept better.
Black (matte) some flames, lower the entire bike (rear schocks + front).
You're looking to build something like this?

Or like this?

Or something completely different?

The detacheable fork was used for Japan bikes and some of the early models. (not sure which ones)
But they certainly are no common thing.
So if you got a spare one... ;)
