Chaly Carb issue
Hi,
I have recently bought a honda chaly cf70 (garage find and has been sitting 25 years) and am having afew issues with the carb. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice or point me in the direction of a replacement. It will run for a couple of minutes every time i take the carb out and put it back in. I think it may be the jets may be getting clogged but this is my first bike so im a bit of a novice. I have stripped the carb and cleaned it to the best of my abilities, the jet where the petrol comes out of the bowl is angled so I think it may be that not getting enough fuel through. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi again and thank you for your advice tuftynutkin.
I have added a new inline fuelfilter as the old one was ruined. And yes it has a doughnut shaped float, I have been told to soak the whole carb in boiling water overnight. would this be a good idea? Also I have been using instant gaskets from a tube. Im in devon UK Thanks again.

Re: Chaly Carb issue
Hi there.

Please don't soak the carburettor in water. Your problem sounds to me like a sticking float or needle-valve which is the valve the float controls. Normally the needle-valve is connected to the float with a small piece of bent wire which hooks over a tab on the float. The float rises when the bowl fills with fuel and then shuts off the valve. When the engine runs, the fuel in the bowl gets used and the float SHOULD drop down and release the valve to fill the bowl back up. If the float has got stuck, it won't drop down and if the valve is stuck in, the force of gravity fed fuel won't be enough to release it.

To clean the carburettor, get some carburettor or brake cleaner, a tooth brush, small brass wire brush and some strands of wire. Give everything a good clean and use the strands of wire to gently run through the jets. If you have access to an air compressor with a blower, even better.

If you get stuck, put some pics up ;)

Hope this helps
Jim
