Hi
If it is a 6 volt the only lights that work from the battery are brake and horn the head light etc work from the magneto, the magneto supplies energy for the spark plug so the battery being flat should not cause the problem the ignition switch grounds the magneto when it is turned off and when the switch is in the off position nothing should work.I would check your earths and the fuse next to the battery.

hi, yes i thought of the fuse, thats ok, the earth is bolted on to the frame , so that should be ok,i realise i should get a spark even without a battery, it is very strange as it worked so well after 27 years of standing , then to run fine then nothing

When you put in the tank did you not somehow touch or moved the ignition wires ..... it did hapen to one off my bikes... I damaged a little wire when I put in the new feultank.... you don't need the battery to start the bike but you do need the key to start not?

maybe a problem with the wires coming out the engine a bad connection? or maybe an ignition wire has a bad connection, possibly come off?

hi, yes i think its a tank out job, its a very tight fit and you carn't tell if the cables are trapped or not,

the wiring harness could have been fitted in the wrong position, where it comes out the frame rubber grommet towards the headlight. (not enough slack for when the handle bars are at full lock) when you have had turned the handle bars to full lock its pulled the whole harness inside the frame and some connectors off ?
