I have seen a few people on here mention LED headlamp bulbs but was wondering if anyone had tried using 4.5v LED torches? I have a few for my bicycles, purchased from Ebay for under £5 and they have a very bright output. And they are dimmable too. I wonder if one of these CREE type LEDs could be made to run on 6 volts in a ST70?

Hello Peeps,
Just a quicky..................I've come to the conclution that i'm spending too much time in my gararge doing mundane tasks, and I need my leg to get better faster so that I may get back to work ;) ;)

Anyway I too have been pondering the merits of LED lamps, and cannot find any that use the standard bayonet lamp fixture,............So i've made myself one

I must say (although the photos don't do it justice) the light is pretty good, and at only 4.8 watts I could leave it on all day!! Plus when the MOT comes up again,
I just change the lamp, no need to disconnect or de-solder ;)

All the best Si

Looks interesting SHORROCKS. How does the light out put compare with a standard bulb? I was thinking about using a single Cree LED facing forwards.

Hi p!mp63,

Been down the Cree route but to be honest, you need more reflective light rather than a direct light source. :? The direct light from a Cree lamp is no doubt very bright, but it is only a single point of illumination.

By having multiple LEDS mounted around a single piller makes the light more reflected by the headlight bowl thus giving a more even light source. :D :D

I suppose the best option would be to mount a Cree lamp on the end of my LED lamp, hey presto both options would then be covered :D

I'll try and do a light comparrison between the new "LED" lamp and a standard tungston filiment lamp (subject to photographic limitations)

Have seen LED running lights on Ebay a few times. Maybe one of those may work?

Ahh yes, running lights ie the LED version of the 5 watt wedge side lamps are available, and are pretty good, but not a headlight lamp with that base

If you do find one with the Bocsh type bayonet base, please let me know ;)

Oh................. ever so close, but not close enough :? :?

This is a single ended equal bayonet lamp, and would be used in something like the indicators. We're still on the look out for the holy grail, the un-equal bayonet
double ended Bosch cap lamp, that is a direct one for one replacement ;) ;)
You could use this type of lamp if you are willing to change the lamp holder alter the wiring, and adapt the headlight bowl to suit the new lamp
By using the same base, you don't need to do any of that except just change the lamp :D

Keep on searching :D

I haven't looked at my 6v light fitting in a while but I think it has a metal rim around it so not sure if these are correct and they might be too directional but I'm sure SHORROCKS will let us know. Being a bit lazy today so no image just the link, sorry.
