Having just picked up my lil' ST70 I am starting to think about restoring it. One of the obvious considerations is repainting it. I have achieved quite good results previously with rattle can spray jobs on bicycle frames but was wondering how much I would need to pay a professional to respray my frame and parts. I am not looking to achieve a concourse finish and would be happy with a reasonably good one instead. It was originally candy red but someone at some point has painted it a not very nice shade of blue. I like the idea of metallic green as this is my favorite colour.

As you have not put your location I am unable to quote you the prices Shorrocks and I pay for a local powder coater to experiment on our machines, as can be seen by Simons bike not always tastefully I believe his is one of the new squashed fly range of paints !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just had a quote to blast and powdercoat the following.
Frame, front forks, swing arm, chain guard and top part of my shocks,,,,, for £120

Ive been pondering the paint job on my rusty lady for so long now, should I paint or powdercoat, let alone picking the colour. :D
I was going to go for orange with black mudguards, but after seeing Shorrocks bike I've change my mind.
That's not because I don't like it I just don't want to copy the colour.

I have a different colour in mind, and decided to bite the bullet and get it powdercoated.

Never used these guys but seen there work and it looks good.
They accept parts by post too, so it makes no odds where you are if you don't mind paying postage.

I'll post some pictures when I get the frame back and reassembled.

:D

Hi guys,

I would go powdercoating all the time, its much more hardwareing and I believe the colours are so good now that they can almost match conventional spray finnishes. The prices range from between £180-£280 depending upon the preperation and finnish required. A standard RAL colour is the cheapest, and can also be produced in rattle can form, just in case you need a touch up :) This bike was powdercoated in RAL white. Honda Lady Dax 1.JPG You can go for candy colours as well, they are almost as good as the original finnish :) Red side view 1.JPG Or you can go for "1970's Porn star glitter". (although it doesen't really show to well in the photo) RHS Showing new disk brake.JPG Just remember to ask the powder coater to put in enough sparkle so that it can be seen by the naked eye, and not an electron microscope..........Mr Tuftys purple creation :D :D
All in all the choice is yours. Have you looked at "Hydrographics" This is another good system, but is still quite new.
All the best Si

For those not worried about originality or metallic finishes I can recommend Simoniz Tough Black Gloss aerosol can spray paint. A friend of mine who has restored more bikes than I've had hot dinners tried a couple of coats of this stuff on his RD350 frame and as a time-served bike mechanic/restorer who knows a thing or two about restoring old irons, was absolutely amazed at the incredible finish quality. I've seen it and it's stunning.

I'm contemplating using this on my ST70 frame and other parts and will definitely be using it on the Z50J when the time comes - soon I hope.
Incidentally I collected my Z50J from Foremost Coatings, Unit 20 Hobbs Ind. Est.,near Newchapel on A22, Lingfield Surrey this afternoon..
Shotblasted Z50 Frame, swinging arm,4 split wheel rims, fork downtubes, beadblasted 2 brake backplates,2 hubs plus the underside of the petrol tank plus battery carrier all for £110 the lot including basic grey primer coat.
Extremely helpful guy who takes a lot of care, excellent service and can thoroughly recommend him for all the right reasons.
