1972 ST70 6 volt wiring
Afternoon..... Just found the forum. This is my first post.

I've got a 1972 ST70. Had it for about 30 years or so. Hasn't been run for about 15 years, and at the moment I'm in the process of getting it up and running, and back on the road.

I stripped the original engine down and found several things wrong. It neded another crankshaft as the threaded clutch end had broken off. Also the stator plate was butchered. I managed to pick up a couple of Chaly 6 volt CF70 engines and built up an engine, with enough parts in the future to build up another.

The problem I have is electrical, in as much that the stator plate to wiring loom conections are different. On the original ST stator, there are 5 wires going to a rectangular block connector.... BUT... On the CF70 there are again 5 wires but each wire has an individual bullet type connector. I've worked out the relevant ignition wires (on the stator) which are black on both, and I've worked out the neutral switch wire on both. What I can't work out is the lighting wires. On the ST stator there were three white wires going off to the rectangular block connector..... and on the CF stator there are three (yellow, green and white) going off to their own bullet connectors.

On the bike itself.....The wires on the loom connector that the stator connects to are ......Black * Green * Yellow * Pink * Green/Red.
I should be able to work out which two of these are for the ignition and the neutral switch, but I'm unsure where the three lighting wires from the stator (yellow, green and white) should end up.

Other than that, I'm enjoying tinkering around with it. I've ordered a new seat off Litch, and got a new tank from MBUK. I think I'm going to have to end up buying a new ignition coil, as the original has butchered wiring,... and a new battery.

I've ordered quite a few engine / carburettor parts from CSM during the rebuild. Before you know it you end up with quite a large bill !

Hope you can make sense of the wiring question !

Regards....... Steve

The bullet connectors will be something done by a previous owner, as far as I am aware all engines connect into the bike with a single block connector.
Can you trace the wires back to the generator coil and compare where they come out of the windings to get a match with the original one?
Most of these bikes are a money-pit but it is for the love of them that we keep spending on them. My ST70 was a runner when bought but when I stripped it down to investigare an oil-leak I discovered the engine was actually in quite poor condition so I have had it re-bored, and spent quite a bit of money on rebuilding it to hopefully make it as good as new again. All parts have been genuine items ordered from David Silver apart from the oil-pump which I have replaced with a high capacity one as I know from experience that these engines require good top-end lubrication.
