V2V4V8 ST50 Project
Some of you may have seen my ST50 on ebay recently?
A 1971 road registered bike with one owner from new less than 4000 miles and unmodified.
The bike had been stored in a shed for 28 years and my first task is to recommission it while I think about how I am going to take it forward.
My preference is to keep it as standard as possible.
What I want is an MOT so that I can use it on the road. I will not be entering the Classic Bike of the year 2010. But I do want a fully functioning and road legal bike that I can use.
Interesting times ahead.
:)

Hi there
yes it was in my watch box on ebay but to far to travel that is quite an original machine as it has the early exhaust so could well be worth spending time and effort on, the MOT should not be a problem as long as it starts and stops the looks are not important and if the lights dont work you can always get a daytime MOT.
Best of luck Tufty

This type of exhaust was used on the Chaly's as well, and if I remember correctly, they still sell these new ;)
Good luck on the bike!
Treasure the Honda signs, these are becoming quite rara.

I have found a company in Vietnam that makes replica rear shocks about £60 including postage so probably worth a punt.
They have offered to paint them to match my bike for £3!

Does anyone know what the official Honda colour / number is for a candy red 71 ST50?

Check the shocks carefully. I looked at these but when comparing the measurements they quote to my originals they seem to be slightly shorter. Also, they have 'sales' every week or so when items are discounted by anything from 5% to 20% which can make quite a difference. If you decide to order from them (I have delt with them several times) they give a discount for multiple orders and will also combine postage.

You should search this forum.
I posted all the Honda color codes on here somewhere a while ago.

Hi
I followed your advice about searching for paint codes. I searched the forum using the search link - all I keep getting is a message telling me that I cannot put a word into the search bar that is longer than 14 characters!! :? I entered the words "Paint Codes", then "Paint", then "Codes" and just kept getting the same reply; so, I gave up!!! Why dont you just post the link to where the info is??? It would be soooooo much simpler!!!!!!!!

I could certainly do with that information myself as I need the code for Candy Ruby Red!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the information.

So far I have rebuilt the carb. It was in the worse condition I have ever seen! Covered/full of a greenish mulch.

My last restoration was a NC30, which had been off the road for 10 years and the carbs on that were real bad. However, it did start but could not have out accelerated an ST50 from the traffic lights.

There is absolutely no way the ST50 would have started (had I tried).

The next job was cleaning out the fuel tank. The reserve pipe was totally blocked, as though someone had filled it with bearing grease and allowed it to mature for 28 years. Also there was a load of what appeared to be rust in the tank. But, as you know its a plastic tank! Go figure.

I wonder what I will find next?

Hi there
I was lead to believe that ST's had metal tanks and that it was only the yank CT's that had plastic ones, if your carb is as old as the bike like mine you could end up replacing it.
