Eureka Moment

The word frustration means different things to different people, but to me it illustrates that feeling you get when you are told something has worked but when you get it home it doesn't. I bought my my Lady Dax off of ebay from someone who had bought 3 months before as a "running restoration " only needing a tidy up, the seller was honest and told me he had not run it as it was winter and he decided to focus on his major projects, I picked up the bike and took it home where it has resided it my family dining room "my wife appears to understand my midlife crisis " but my children think I have lost the plot, I have replaced lots of non Honda parts with originals from David Silver and some parts from America including a NOS full tool kit. A couple of weeks ago came the oppurtunity to start the bike up OH HELL what had I done no spark I had put in clean fuel, the plug was wet so the carb was working, I checked the points no spark and I then posted a question on this website about a pulley puller but was lucky enough to get a brand new one from a local bike shop for less than the asking price on ebay. I removed the magneto flywheel and tested the wiring from the 6 way plug to the loom and this was okay. Checked the coil which is a pain to get too but again this was okay according to the Clymer Manual instructions. I went through every thing again this afternoon and decided to take apart every plug and trace the wiring through. The outcome of this was sheer frustration until I went to put the 6 way ignition plug back together, all the colours were o/k but i noticed it had additional heat shrink tubing so in desperation I cut this open and there it was " black to black pink to pink etc with the exception that in the sleeving the joins were to different colours. I repinned the plug and EUREKA a spark, this begs the question did the previous previous owner ever run it and if I had attempted to run the bike when I picked it up I might have walked away from a peach. Hopefully if I get some spare time over the next few weeks or so I will get the bike completely how I want it and then the MOT.
I hope I havent bored you to much but when to almost give up and think it is time to take it to an expert but pride says check it again and you get a result there is no better feeling.

Good work Tufty! You must have the patience of a saint to have diagnosed that!

I don't have much experience with electrics so I would have of taken mine to an expert if I had the same problem (luckily the bike has been in my family since new so I know it's history and it did run prior to it being stripped down).

Looking forward to seeing pictures of your bike!

These kind of troubles are the worst, nut the nicest when solved.
Lots of the old bikes have wrong electrical wirings.
This because of many reasons:
- battery out of order --> connect them directly (trough the rectifier)
- lost key --> hot wire the bike
- use the originally unused wire to get the lights working, because the original has a bad mass, or...
etc....

The smartest thing to do is to buy a complete wire harnass/loom (not sure which of both is the correct word)
This is the only way you are 100% sure that everything will work perfect for a long time.

I drew the schematics myself. If you need them, just ask.

Hi WAYNUS
The loom is now sorted but as you stated it can be a nightmare also I have The CLYMER workshop manual for my year bike and it was a different colour coding and also a copy of the workshop manual supplied by HONDA UK and this did not show my loom/harness but last week a got a copied owners manual off of ebay which showed my year bike and the correct colour codes and the correct connections which helped me a great deal so this little book has proved invaluable. The great day is getting closer but work keeps slowing things up. Oh the other great thing today was that my NOS tool kit arrived from the USA it ended up costing me £38.00 including postage the only thing missing was the feeler gauge but this was not supplied on the 1974 model apparently and I don't remember there being one in my 1972 bike toolkit, just a little thing but originality is everything, anyone know where i can get an original rear carrier.
(how sad is this i keep all the component barcode labels from honda in my folder) does anyone know how long Honda have been barcoding component bags ???????

I think that if you bought a Lady DAX at the right money (a lot cheaper than it was worth) then all that effort was worth it but, if you paid top money for it (because it was a "Lady Dax") then I probably would have felt like going round his house and telling him exactly what I thought of him!!! From what you have said, I think he was a LIAR and I certainly dont think for one moment he ever had that bike running and it was for that reason he sold it.!! No-one would say it was running when there was an issue with wiring that stuck right up the top end of the frame - it wasnt like it was an intermittent fault or a quick fix thing....it was a permanent problem!!! It just goes to show............ its very hard to trust people when it comes to money!!!

You just gotta think - what price you paid, compared to how long it took to put right - his stupidity/deviousness may have been your gain!!

CHEERS!
