Re: Original or Replica
Hi there
I'm glad to see the debate is still alive and kicking, I am in a very fortunate position in having 2 ST's and now find myself in a rather odd position in that when building an "original" machine the search for genuine Honda parts is all consuming mostly in money terms and certain parts are the holy grail, but as the only true genuine Honda part on my new machine is the frame (1969 ST50 with the original exhaust lug intact) the cost to put it back to its original former spec would be extremely prohibitive and who is to say it was ever a complete bike and not imported as a spare part as it came with no V5 I have no idea of the original colour all the Honda paperwork states is the year of manufacture of the frame. The other thing to note is that everyone has a different opinion as to original condition (take note of the Lady on Ebay at the moment) the cost of original nuts and bolts is horrendous and who is to say that the bolts we buy now are original as by definition they should have been produced at the same time as was originally fitted on the bike, or is being sold in a Genuine Honda bag good enough. I remember on my own 1972 ST70 as a 17 year old engineering apprentice (this bike was bought new by me)I had indicator lights and a rack fitted and these were not standard spec for a few years after, I also replaced what were considered at that time to be inferior Bridgestone tyres with avon red Stripe and as most of the nuts and bolts had started to tarnish after 6 months of abuse racing Vespa 125cc scooters and the occasional NSU Quickly I replaced these with borrowed stainless steel bolts from the machine shop, so anyone having bought that ST would think that it was original.

Pouring oil on troubled waters I think not (possibly petrol) Regards Clive
