DVLA driving me mad!!
Hi all,

I recently bought an ST70 off ebay which is only 50% complete and there is no paperwork / registration number with the bike. I've contacted Honda UK who in turn contacted Honda Japan to try and get a year of manufacture certificate but they have said their records do not go that far back (I think the bike was manufactured around 1975). I have now contacted Monkeybike UK who are looking into the year of manufacture but if they issue me with a year of manufacture certificate, the DVLA are saying that before I can get a registration number/logbook for the bike, I must have the bike insured and MOT'd - does anyone know it that is correct? I'm worried that if I spend a load of money restoring the bike back to its original condition the DVLA could then turn around and issue a 'Q' plate or worse still, say the bike had been stolen years ago!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :(

Hi Steve,

I think you emailed me the other day about this? Sorry to hear it's causing you a problem.

Have a look at this thread: http://www.st70.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=39
I wonder if they will be able to help. There is a guy who uses this forum called Tufty and he might be able to shed some light on your situation!

Also, how can you get an MOT and insurance without a registration number in the first place? I think the DVLA are being out of order on this one!

Good luck and I am sure someone will reply to your query! :)

You can get MOT & insurance without a reg number, it is done against the chassis or frame number. I have done this a few time now when I have registered my ex MOD vehicles.

You book your vehicle in for an MOT, they grant the certificate (assuming it has passed that is) and then you are given an age related plate and your road-tax at the local DLVA office all in one go. They update the MOT certificate and you inform your insurance company of the new details.

Thanks fellas, I think I will see what comes back from Monkeybike UK regarding a year of registration certificate then I am going to go to my nearest DVLA office, try and sit down with them and find out exactly the best way to go about getting a registration number for the bike. As I said, I would hate to spend tuns of money restoring the bike to its former glory and then have the DVLA says the bike was stolen years ago!

Thanks again fellas

Hi all,

It looks like I'm finally getting somewhere! I've received my Year of Manufacture Certificate from MonkeybikeUK (1975). I took it to my local DVLA office and basically they have said that my bike has never been registered on the road so once I have it restored, MOT'd and insured I can fill in a V55/5 form, arrange a date and time to take it to the local DVLA office for them to inspect the bike then they will sort out an age related plate with all the relevant paperwork so fingers crossed - I think I'm starting to get somewhere! All I've got to do now is start saving for bits n bobs to get the bike up and running, I suspect I'm in for a steep learning curve as I have no idea where to start first!

Hi Steve,

That's great news! Sounds like you are starting to get somewhere. :) All this hassle with the DVLA will be worth it in the end trust me.
Also, our bikes are the same year 8-)

If you have any queries or problems post them up, there are people on here with a wealth of knowledge who can help. :)
