CT70/ST70....Whats the difference
Hi,

New member here. I love the look of the CT70 with its chrome mudguards and the different position of the front one higher up the front forks.
Please educate me. What are the differences between a CT and an ST and can a ST be made to look like a CT with ease ? ( that is without welding/drilling/major work ).

Thank you in advance for any information received.

Regards

Nat.

Re: CT70/ST70....Whats the difference
Well, there are quite a lot of different CT70 and ST70 versions.
I'll try to sum up the most obvious things:

- different engines:
normal ST70 engine is 3 speed semi, Hitachi flywheel (different crank)
CT70 engines came in different versions: both Hitachi and Mitsubishi flywheels, semi clutch or manual clutch, 3 speed 4 speed (CT70H)
- different style of forks
The CT's don't have the rubber 'socks' and the legs are different as well
- different style of handling bars / speedo
Some CT's have the ST style, some of the haven't. These come with a seperate (round) speedo instead of the trangle speedo in the light bucket
- Some ST's have blinkers
- The exhaust shield is different on some CT's, the early ST's have a low type exhaust (CF70 style)
- The CT's have ofroad tires
- different type of seat (A lot of different versions were used on the CT's troughout production years)
- Metal gas tank on the ST's, plastic for the CT's (these hold a little more gass too)
....

Aha...................I see.........lots of differences.
Thanks for having taken the time to educate me.
All that remains is to find a suitable bike.

Here in Oz we have both ST's and Ct's , really not a lot of difference in the early models.
I have a good honda parts manual the covers both types, if you want a copy PM me and I can email.

Early CT70 have same engine and flywheel as ST's
- different style of forks
Early CTKO's same as Brit Forks
The CT's don't have the rubber 'socks' and the legs are different as well
Early CTKo's front end suspension same as Brit's had rubber boots
- different style of handling bars / speedo
Later CT's had round speedos with diff light bucket but the early ones are same as ST

Brit heat shields are different, but difficult to get originals

You are right on most points that CT70K0 was the same as the ST70.
They had lesser differences between them as all the other CT models have (1972 and up)
But still, there were quite a lot:
- original ST had the option between removable and solid front fork
- the lower type exhaust was never used on the CT
- Stickers were used on the CT instead of the emblems
- CT speedo was always in mph
- no holes in the frame for the crash guard on the CT
- no 4 speed + different shift pattern
- no Mitshubishi flywheel on the ST's

Hi Waynus,
Yeah not much difference really, if your doin 100point resto you want to get it right.
The Export ST's over here had removable front ends for a short time, most are stock.
Lower type exhaust was def a ST thing, up to 1970 thereafter they went Up.
Early St had emblems but the later ones over here were all sticker jobs.
CT speedos in Aust were MPH up to 1973 after that they were all KPH.
No holes in the frame for crash guard, pretty sure all the CT/ST frames have holes in the frame, either used by guard or filled with rubber plugs when no guard installed.
Send me your email address and can forward the CT/ST Honda manual I have, you can see the diff options in detail.
The later mitsu flywheel and 4 speed jobs were more of a US thing, i've seen a few 4 speed Cts but they were imports
cheers
