ST70 Engine/Frame Numbers

Hello guys,

I have recently picked up an ST70 project with a few spare engines and I have a couple of questions for the experts, any help would be appreciated. I am used to YAMAHA bikes so these Hondas are a completely new thing to me!

Q1 - Should the engine/frame number match? If this is no, how can you tell if the bike has the original engine?

Q2 - Is there any information regarding prefixes, or engine number ranges which apply to specific models?

Hi RD21,

Q1, No never match, so it's difficult to tell what the original engine was unless you have the log book.
You may be able to find out from Honda if your lucky but I wouldn't hold you breath. It's likely the engine number will be a later number than the frame number. So if you have two engines pick the one closest to the frame number.

Q2. ST70 engines are prefixed with ST70E, and ST50 prefixed with ST50E.
There may be country specific variations, or be different on newer 12v bikes.
My knowledge on this is on early 6v uk bikes.

Thanks for the reply. Ahh I see, I have spare engines with prefixed CF70E and CF70, so these would be from a C70?

I think they are Chaly engines.
