Which Bike?

Hi All,

I am new to the site and I am currently looking to purchase my first bike. I have two options in mind and would appreciate everyone's honest thoughts as to which I should go for. The first is a 1969 Honda ST50 and the other is a 1978 ST70!! The wife and I will only be using it for when my VW Panelvan is in the shop and for trotting around locally on. We ideally want something that will happy sit at 40-50mph (don't need to much power), but I don't know which option would be the best.

If you can help then it would save a load of headaches for me!!

Welcome to the site. Firstly do you love your wife, and how strong is your marrige? If the answer to both those questions are possitive then don't buy the 50cc, especially if you are thinking about going two's-up. 40/50 mph on a 50cc with you and your wife could only be achieved if you were downhill with a gust behind you whilst slip streaming a milkfloat!

The 70cc would be a better option, but again two's-up you would only be looking at 30/40 mph max, and thier not very comfortable for two people.

If you where looking for a collectable bike then I would always opt for the oldest, ie the 1969 variant (this bike has the low slung exhaust) If in pristine condition, this would be very desirable to any ST collectors stable.

If its for practical reasons, then ideally you would need a bigger engine for everyday use, so as to keep up with the modern day hustle, I would also suggest no lower than 110cc, these enngines are relativly cheap and are in plentiful supply. Take out the original engine and place in a box, but keep.

If you were looking to use seasonally, and you wanted the look of a Dax but not the expense, you could buy a brand new and modern 125cc for around £1000 on the road.
