NEWBIES REGISTERING BIKES WITH NO DOCS
How often do we read on this and other forums "I've just got a HondaYamasakiSuki with no docs of any sort so how do I get a reg.no and V5 etc? - just like I did 2 years ago so I hope tjis might be usefull lesson to others facing the same problem.
I've been jumping through many beaurocratic hoops since August eventually getting my ST125 registered with the DVLA with an age related number.
I won't take up valuable forum space here with the details of what has to be done as there's too much to detail but I've been invited to submit an article for the VJMC "TANSHA" magazine detailing the paperwork needed.
I can email a copy to anyone interested faced with the same potential problem as it will make a good bedtime story.
The moral is either DON'T buy a foreign made bike with absolutely NO docs of any description irrespective of whether you want to register it for road use or not, OR be prepared to wait several months and jump through DVLA/HMRC hoops as it can be done.
Anyone interested can send me a PM

Words of Wisdom. All ye read and take note. Have just finished jumping through my last DVLA hoop and have had an age related number for my German bike.
It is a long process and at times seems absolutely pointless. How many people have the DVLA had to employ to tie us all up with this red tape.
I agree with you entirely. I will never buy another vehicle without registration documents.
The new log book for my German vehicle is in a frame on the wall!!!!!!
I have been told that it is the dishonest people among us that has caused all this unnecessary "run around" i.e. illegal importers and number plate dealers. They profit, we suffer.

It,s easy, Can't see what all the fuss is about, V62, 25 quid and bingo, off goes the form and the money........... Ah! whats this ? I need a VIC check?, Fill out the next lot of forms send it off and await the email confirming the place and time for the check................Email arrives,........ VIC checks don't apply to bikes, What you need to do is apply for a Vehicle Examination! (it's carried out the same centres as VIC checks by the same blokes and probably the same test)Go figure!
"It's a straight forward process Sir, you need to fill in a V62 and and enclose 25 quid".......... Getting a bit Groundhog Day by now!
The bike has to be fully roadworthy BTW for the Exam so I am in the process of robbing bits from my other ST70 to get the bike up and running ASAP, I was told over the phone that there is no statute on time, but as most people you talk to at the DVLA seem to make things up as they go along I am hurrying the process up, I have been "Assured" that my total outlay will be no more than £41, Gritty determination and limitless patience will see me with a V5.............. Unless it turns out to be a stolen bike! (pretty certain it is'nt) In which case I have lost the bike and a sizeable pile of bits off my other ST70.
The DVLA would seem to be a disjointed chain of departments with severe communication/training problems.

Enjoy

It might be worth mentioning that the 0300 number for the DVLA is a non revenue sharing number (DVLA don't get a cut of the call charges) and should cost a max of 9P a minute to a landline, probably more to a mobile, But the call will be included in your airtime package minutes to either if you have them.
Something to take comfort from whilst you are listening to the on hold muzac!

Hi Brian, intetesting post. I may have to get thatrint out from you if you dont mind please. I have an early 70s ST with no documents thats missing a lot of original parts. I am assembling them slowly and putting them on the bike as is, ie unrestored. I was going to ask the VJMC to look at it and date it for me. For me the main motivation is to get the bike legally back on the road. If i can do it with an age related number then great, if not i eould settle for a Q plate. Question is: do i send them the photos of it as is and unrestore? Or spend a small fortune restoring it back to period only to be told they cant narroow it down to a particular year. All i know for certain is that its pre 73 as it only has the frame numbet stamped above the engine, the fork tube doesnt carry a number.

I should have said if i can get it registeted with an age related number then i will restore it back to how it left the factory. If i have to settle for a Q plate then i will go down the custom route, ie 125nengine, non original paint colours.

Hello pimp63
I'll be pleased to post a copy of the article when I've had it proof read as I'd like to make sure it could be as definitive as possible to show the steps that need to be taken in the right order.
Main thing everyone needs to accept is having patience in dealing with the various departments as there's no shortcuts.Based on my experience for example if you want to put a bike on the road in April and you have not a shred of paperwork to authenticate it you need to give yourself at least 6 weeks lead time from the day you get it MOT'd.
Meanwhile get fiddling, fettling and polishing ready for the big day!
The article will be published in a forthcoming edition of TANSHA, the VJMC magazine and hope it will provide some answers to most peoples questions.
All for now
